2017 BAFTA TV Awards

Nominations for the 2017 BAFTA TV Awards were announced on 11 April 2017. Nicola made it to the shortlist for Best Supporting Actress for her work in Last Tango in Halifax (Christmas Special). The other ladies in her category included :

  • WUNMI MOSAKU for Damilola, Our Loved Boy
  • SIOBHAN FINNERAN for Happy Valley and
  • VANESSA KIRBY for The Crown
  •

The awards were handed out in a ceremony held on 14 May 2017 at London’s Royal Festival Hall. Nicola didn’t win in her category. See the full list of winners HERE.

To be eligible for the 2017 BAFTA TV Awards, a show should have been broadcast in the UK between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2016. This means that Unforgotten Series 2 was excluded from the 2017 nominations but will be eligible for the 2018 nominations. We have high hopes for Nicola in the 2018 BAFTA TV Awards.

Sarah Lancashire won in her category, Best Leading Actress, for her work in Happy Valley Series 2. She is such a Nicola Walker fan. In her acceptance speech, she thanked Nicola even though Nicola was not in the cast for Happy Valley!

You may recall that in her acceptance speech when she won Best Supporting Actress in 2014 for Last Tango in Halifax, Sarah thanked Nicola three times!

Nicola’s plus one at the awards ceremony was her husband, Barnaby Kay. They may such a good looking couple!

    The Circuit, comedy pilot

    The-Circuit-w-airdate
Nicola has been cast in a new comedy pilot called The Circuit. Here is the press release from Channel 4

Channel 4 invites you to the worst dinner party that’s ever happened in the world anywhere. The Circuit, produced by Merman and written by Dennis Kelly (Utopia, Pulling) and Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe, Pulling) is a brand new comedy pilot commissioned by Channel 4 about the horror and hilarity of social engagement.

Gabe (Adeel Akhtar) and Nat (Eva Birthistle) have left their wonderful old life and moved to an area where people seem to oscillate somewhere between highly-strung and psychopathic. The reason they left isn’t immediately clear but they’re here now and trying to make the best of it. They go to one dinner party hosted by neighbour Helene (Victoria Hamilton) and her husband Sasha (Tobias Menzies) with fellow prisoners Danny (Paul Ready), Marty (Nicola Walker) and her girlfriend Angie (Desiree Akhavan). And so begins a descent into hell and Goulash, from which no one will ever fully recover.

Phil Clarke, Channel 4’s head of comedy said: “The pitch for The Circuit was irresistible. The premise – that everyone hates going to dinner parties but goes anyway – is a great starting place for a comedy. Plus, the prospect of a script from Sharon Horgan and Dennis Kelly, writing together again for the first time since Pulling, was incredibly exciting. The script didn’t disappoint, and I am delighted that we are now making a pilot.”

Rachel Springett, comedy commissioner for Channel 4 said: “We can’t wait to see this stellar cast breathe life into Dennis and Sharon’s fabulous script. It’s a very exciting project which we are thrilled to be making with them.”

Clelia Mountford, Founder and MD for Merman, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Channel 4 on the longest dinner party ever. We just hope they’ll bring the wine.”

Dennis Kelly and Sharon Horgan said: “It has taken just 10 short years for us to agree to work together again. It was a mistake.”

The Circuit pilot was commissioned by Channel 4 and is produced by t (The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret, Divorce ) for Merman. It was written by Sharon Horgan and Dennis Kelly, who also serve as executive producers.

At this stage, it looks as though Nicola will only be involved in the filming of the pilot. The pilot will be aired, hopefully sometime in 2016, and then it will be up to Channel 4 to order a full season of shows. If that happens, Nicola may or may not be further involved. She has filmed other pilots in the past where she did not end up having any further involvement because of scheduling conflicts by the time the pilot is picked up.

Sharon Horgan has written a lot of comedy hits, but equally, she has written some shows which failed to hit the mark, e.g. Dead Boss. So we’re keeping an open mind about this new project. It would be nice to see Nicola in a comedic role.

    Production Updates

Sharon Horgan has shared these production pics on Hellomerman, her Instagram page :

Nicola can be seen on set in the third pic.

    Trailer

The pilot will be aired on Channel 4 in the UK on Thursday, 25 August 2016. Here’s a trailer made available on YouTube.

It is still unclear at this stage whether the show will progress to a full series, and if so, whether Nicola will still be attached as a series regular.

Adeel Akhtar was in River, though he did not have any direct scenes with Nicola in that show.

Last Tango in Halifax Series 4

    LTiH-Series-4-banner-pic

    UK transmission date :

After waiting for almost two years, finally!!!

    Monday, 19 December 2016, 9pm BBC One
    Tuesday, 20 December 2016, 9pm BBC One

    Back in February 2015 …

First the good news, YES there will be a series 4. After Episode 6 of Series 3 was aired in the UK on 1 February 2015, an announcement was made at the end of the programme to the effect that “Last Tango in Halifax will return with a new series“, AND the BBC logged this tweet :

    20150201 BBC Tweet

And now, for the bad news : Series 4 won’t be on screen until late 2016, at the earliest! Various sources have confirmed this. Read more in our Last Tango in Halifax FAQ.

Series 4 may well turn out to be a movie rather than a series with 6 episodes. On 29.11.2014, we saw on Twitter that Sally Wainwright gave a talk to the Overgate Hospice in Calderdale during which she revealed that Last Tango in Halifax might be made into a film. How exciting. Nicola on the big screen. Yes!!! At the end of the day, whether Series 4 will have six episodes or one long movie is up to Sally Wainwright and the BBC. It will also depend on the respective schedules of the lead actors/actresses.

    Fire Horse

    Roddy and Jules

    What’s the story about?

From various sources, we have this synopsis

Fire Horse. A story about holding onto the past. It is about recognising that change is not always good. Society is moving so fast, sometimes we need to take a step back and look at the world we have created and the world we are leaving behind.

We got in touch with the Director, Matt Bell, and received a more detailed summary of the film’s plot

My film is about an old lady, Ada (Doreen Mantle) who lives in a little rural village in middle England. She uses the village shop everyday, even buying goods that she doesn’t need (e.g. food for her deceased dog). Over the years herself and Roddy the shopkeeper (Barnaby Kay) have developed a lovely relationship. She knows the shop is on the brink of closure but hopes her little routine will help to keep the place open. Roddy is struggling to keep his head above water but deep down knows the days are numbered as the supermarkets and their home delivery service force him out. He feels like a failure to his family and doesn’t want to let his wife Jules (Nicola) down. Jules is wise and knows exactly what is going on. She assures Roddy that everything will be alright. Under pressure one day, Roddy snaps at Ada. This sparks Ada into taking matters into her own hands by staging a sit down protest in the road. She hopes to stop the supermarket delivery van (driven by Rick) getting through. She thought she could force villagers to use the shop. It’s her final stand born out of friendship and a belief in a way of life.

Matt also gave us these comments

The film is in essence a story about change and friendship between old and not so old, hence the title Fire Horse. That was a term used during the industrial revolution when steam trains took over from horse and cart. It was inspired by a return visit to the little village I grew up in after living in London for 10 years. Everything had changed and I felt the community spirit that used to exist had slipped away. The village shop I worked in as a teenager had closed and a massive house with 4×4’s on the drive had been built in it’s place. The pub and the dairy had shut. All the charm and character had been lost and new houses had sprung up all over the place. This little old village that I had such fond memories of had been taken over by the 21st century. The days of leaving your door unlocked and stopping to have a chat with all and sundry was left in the past.

What touched me the most about working in the shop as a child was the fact that the old people who didn’t get out much would just come in to have a chat and would often buy a couple of token efforts. It was just a place for them to get out and have a chin wag. Of course we stocked most daily essentials that they relied on but they would mainly come in just to say hello and to mooch about the village.

This is my first film, I’m a little nervous about how it will be perceived. It was shot last minute as we didn’t know what Nicola’s schedule was going to be on Spooks – the original shoot was done in 2011, around the same time as Nicola was shooting Series 10 of Spooks. We were only given 48 hours final notice of her availability so this was all the time I had to get everything into place. It was quite a stress and chaotic 2 days and I’m hoping this hasn’t come across in the film. It has taken me nearly 2 years to finish post production due to a combination of parenthood, work commitments and frustratingly, my editor being mugged and having his MAC and my drives with the film’s final cut on it stolen. I also wanted to make sure that the film was the best it could be before it was released to festivals etc.

A huge THANK YOU to Matt for giving us these comments and the pic of Nicola and Barnaby in character from the film. This sounds like a really interesting film. With more backing financially, it could be turned into a feature length movie or TV movie. We wish Matt all the best with this film. Since the film is only about 17 minutes long (in its present form), Matt is currently hoping to show this in various film festivals in order to generate more interest. If any visitor to this site can help publicize this movie, please get in touch with Matt. He is on Twitter, as @MattBellAD.

Oh, and Bravo to Nicola and Barnaby for getting involved with this project!!!

    A Mother’s Son

A new two part drama from ITV which stars Herminone Norris as a mother who suspects that her son might have murdered a teenage girl.

HERE is the press release from ITV where you can read more about this programme. You can also download the Press Pack for this show HERE.

Nicola has a guest role in this programme, as DC Sue Upton. This may or may not be the same role which Nicola auditioned for previously. A few months ago, a Google Alert put us on notice that some audition clips were available on video sharing site Vimeo relating to A Monther’s Son. Nicola’s audition for the role of a policewoman was amongst the clips which we saw. However, a few days later, the entity responsible for uploading these clips realised they must have made a mistake and made the clips “private”, i.e. the clips are not available for viewing by the general public. In the clip which we saw, Nicola was asked to read a scene where she asked questions of the mother of the suspect. Several other actresses also read the same scene and their clips were also available. As of this writing, we have no idea whether the role Nicola ended up with is the same one for which she auditioned, and how big a role this part is.

We won’t have long to wait to find out. The first episode will air on Monday, 3 September 2012 at 21:00 GMT, with the second episode to follow on Tuesday at the same time slot. Interestingly, Nicola will also be appearing in her guest episode of New Tricks on Monday, 3 September 2012 at 21:00 GMT, but that show is on BBC One. If Nicola also appears in episode one of A Mother’s Son on Monday, 3 September 2012, then it will be a historic first where you can watch her on two channels in two programme at the same time!!!

Nicola at the 2012 TV BAFTAs

The 2012 TV BAFTAs were handed out in a star studded ceremony held at the Royal Festival Hall in London on Sunday, 27 May 2012. The very last series of Spooks was nominated in the Best Drama category but it did not win. For a full list of nominees and winners, check out the BAFTA website.

Nicola attended this ceremony with her co-star in Spooks, Peter Firth (who apparently brought along his oft talked about but never before seen girlfriend), as well as the writers of Spooks Series 10 and executives from Kudos. She wore a long black or dark blue skirt teamed with a short jacket of the same color. In her hand was a red clutch, the same colour as her shoes.

Nicola had no shortage of friends at this event. Others in attendance included :

Her former co-stars in Spooks :

    • Jenny Agutter (who was a presenter)
    • Raza Jeffrey
    • Robert Glenister (who was a presenter)
    • Rupert Penry-Jones (who was a presenter)
    • Lara Pulver
    • Miranda Raison (who was a presenter)

    Her friends :

There was no coverage from the mainstream press about Nicola’s walk down the red carpet. As for the two hour programme itself, there were just a couple of very fleeting reaction shots of Nicola after they showed clips from Spooks at the beginning of the programme and when announcing the Drama category. Here are the only screencaps we could find from the actual programme (courtesy of Lisa (@flip18)).

Thank goodness for some very staunch fans of Spooks who met Nicola on the red carpet and took some photos which they have agreed for us to share with you. A big THANK YOU from all of us here on the Editorial Team. 😀

Fans on duty at the red carpet prepared a couple of signs, one of which said “Spooks” and the other said “Ruth Evershed Lives”. When Nicola saw the “Ruth” sign, she immediately walked over and signed it “4 eva xx”. A photo of that sign is included in the Gallery.

Fans who took these photos own the copyright in these photos, so please respect their rights if you want to use them in any way other than ogling them in private!

(more pics will be added the gallery as and when we receive them from the relevant fans)

    Update : 28 May 2012

Alison Graham from the Radio Times tweeted today about how much both she and Nicola still misses “Ruth Evershed”. Alison also said that even though she tried, she couldn’t get Nicola to agree to join Twitter!.

This article, which came up in our Google Alerts, tells us that M.A.C. Cosmetics was the make-up partner for last night’s awards ceremony. The article seems to imply that Nicola was amongst the attendees who took advantage of the services provided by M.A.C. Cosmetics for this event. @Born_Spook told us that Nicola looked radiant on the red carpet. Perhaps we have M.A.C. Cosmetics to thank for that?!

    Report from the trenches

Here is a report by a fan who was on the scene yesterday afternoon. This will explain some of the poses struck by Nicola in the photos gallery.

    by Emily (@ManderleyDream)

A position near the barriers; check. Spooks signs sellotaped and in place; check. Sun-tan lotion; whoops.

After a lot of waiting around (which is never too tiring when you’re amongst friends) the guests started to arrive and filtered in. After a while, guests from Spooks started to make their way up the steps (including Lara Pulver, Rupert Penry Jones and Raza Jaffrey) and our signs (so wonderfully made by Kate) attracted their attention as well as other guests who took their own time to photo them and nudge their partners and point.

Eventually we caught sight of Peter Firth who was looking over in our direction at the signs. We called out to him and he made a beeline for us, saying “hello girls” and asking us how we were and vice versa. As pleasantries were being exchanged Nicola Walker popped up behind him, smiling and cheerful as ever. Originally we couldn’t see her in the line where Peter was but apparently this was due to a delay at the ticket entry. She then spotted us and pointed at us before making her way over. Peter joked that they felt overdressed for the occasion and that everyone was wearing beachwear.

Nicola and Peter took their time and signed various pictures and were more than happy to have photos with the fans. At one point, Peter signed a picture and came up behind Nicola, placed it in her hands and said “sign that one please, darling”. Nicola was busy signing away while Peter searched around the fans in order to give a pen lid back. As Nicola signed one photo, she commented that it was a really lovely picture (it was the bridge scene from 8.2).

She looked at the signs and said “I love your signs!” before taking a biro and writing on one of the signs. Originally it said “Ruth Evershed lives”, but with Nicola’s addition, it read “Ruth Evershed lives 4eva xx”.

Nicola then saw our wristbands and said “My wristbands, I should have worn my wristbands!”. Lucy then told her that we had another wristband for her and Nicola just stood there looking very serious and ordered “Give it to me.” While Lucy fished out the wristband, Nicola and Peter were posing for photos, taken by both fans and other guests (Jane Featherstone took a few). Jane Featherstone then, with a big smile, snapped a few photos of our signs on her iphone before going back to the queue, it was very funny! At this point, Peter wandered off to sign more autographs to our right leaving Nicola to receive her new wristband.

When Lucy gave it to her, she put in on her wrist straight away and then took her time to read it. It said “Something wonderful that was never said” and her jaw dropped for a second before she quickly shouted “Peter!” and crooked her finger, beckoning him over. He returned quickly and Nicola made them both pose for more photographs, putting her hand (with wristband) on his chest and saying “right there, over the heart”.

Peter then vanished again and Nicola had more photos with us, commenting that it was the end of an era really and this may be the last chance for Spooks. When asked if she could call Peter back quickly, she looked around and walked towards him but he was heading back for the queue for the red carpet. She then ran back to us and shouted “I have no control over that man!” before smiling and heading back towards the queue. On her way back she did quickly turn around and blow a few quick kisses before catching up with the Spooks group (showing Simon Crawford Collins her wristband in the process).

    THANK YOU Emily!!!

    Update : 29 May 2012

And now, we have a three minute clip to go with emily’s report. THANK YOU @MrsGilesFarmer.

(With some browsers, the embedded video clip may not show up immediately. Just refresh the page and the clip should display properly.)

This clip shows details in Nicola’s dress which could not be seen in the photos. Her dress looks great. Love the red heels!

    Spooks S10 R1 DVD release

Finally, we have news of the Region 1 release of Series 10. This press release from the BBC was taken from Tv Shows on DVD website

A fiery farewell! Never shown on television, the final season of the hugely successful, long-running BBC drama reaches a thrilling conclusion in six riveting hour-long episodes. The crack counter-terrorism unit of the British Secret Service tries desperately to mend relations in the US and Middle East, while the squad tracks down a known anarchist who may be building a dirty bomb in London.

The Bafta-winning, international hit spy drama returns for a nail-biting tenth and final series. With the truth about Lucas North finally revealed, and following his rooftop showdown at the end of the last series, Harry is facing some complicated questions about the future of Section D as well as some skeletons from his own past.

Relationships between the CIA and MI5 have never been more strained, but add the Russian secret service to the mix and Harry and his team have a power timebomb on their hands. Fast-paced, tense and exhilarating, the latest series sees the team tested to their limits as the pressure is on to stop whoever is attacking the fledgling relationship between Britain and Russia.

The BBC is scheduling a DVD release in the USA and Canada of MI-5 – Volume 10, making its debut on March 6th! The 2-disc set running approx. 360 minutes contains the final 6 episodes of the program, at a cost of $29.98 SRP.

A few things for US fans to note :

    • The R1 DVDs have a different cover image. It includes the rest of the team, not just Harry and Ruth as was the case with the R2 DVDs. This is possibly because both Max Brown and Lara Pulver have a higher profile in the US market than Nicola or Peter Firth.
    • The press release indicates that the box set will include only 2 discs which cover the 6 episodes. There is no mention of the two featurettes (Harry’ Game and The Top 10 Spooks Moments) which were available as part of the R2 DVDs. The S9 R1 DVDs were also released without the R2 extra features and episode commentaries. US fans who want to have their own copies of the two featurettes on DVD will have to think about buying the R2 DVDs.

    Antony and Cleopatra

June 2012 : The name of this show has been changed to “Last Tango in Halifax”. Read all about it in this Post.

We’ve known about this project for some time now, but refrained from logging a post about it out of respect to the production company who was supposed to make a formal announcement about recent casting for the show a couple of weeks ago. They haven’t done that, but in the meantime, Twitter and other forums have been full of speculation about the show, so we might as well make this post public.

Back in May 2011, the BBC announced the commissioning of a number of new dramas, including this show. The press release at the time stated

Anthony And Cleopatra, 6×60 series, written by Sally Wainwright and made by Red Production Company

New series for BBC One about love and second chances, set in the autumn years of two old school friends. Alan and Celia, both widowed and in their 70s, unexpectedly fall for each other when they meet again after nearly 50 years. Their relationship is a celebratory tale of the uplifting power of love at any age. But this is also a story about family, and about history. Both Alan and Celia have families, and with family comes baggage.

One cast member made Nicola’s involvement in this show public when he tweeted about this in mid December 2011. However, shortly after he tweeted this, he deleted the tweet immediately when he realized that the casting news has not yet been made official. This cast member is also appearing in another TV project in 2012 with Nicola.

On 3 January 2012, @SophieB_ noticed that Nicola’s Spotlight page has been updated to include news of Nicola’s casting as “Gillian” in this show. Thanks to others on Twitter, we now also know that Euros Lyn is the Director for this show. (You can access Euros’s own website HERE.) Both Euros Lyn and Sally Wainwright have had impressive credits in the past, so we await this show with keen interest. It is curious that Nicola’s Spotlight page has not yet been updated to include her appearance in New Tricks/Old School Ties even though we know, again, via Twitter, that she has already completed filming of her guest role back in December 2011.

There have been other tweets about a read through for a 6 part drama which started today (4th January 2012) in Manchester, from other would-be cast members (though this time not the abovementioned cast member). These actors seem to be all to happy to hint about their involvement and yet when pressed further, they clam up and give some lame excuse like, “Sorry everyone. I’m not allowed to say owt until it’s been announced to the world :(“. In that case, why tweet about the great cast, brilliant scripts and fantastic read throughs in the first place? This is most frustrating for fans. Press officers ought to know by now that Twitter leaks news faster than any other medium!

Filming of Antony and Cleopatra will take place in Yorkshire and Manchester between January and March 2012. An air date has not yet been announced. We have no idea as to why the show has the same title as the Shakespeare play, since the subject matter of the two plays bear no resemblance to each other. Perhaps those Nicola fans who are also Shakespeare scholars can hazard a guess as to why the script writer chose this particular title for her show.

You can access the production company’s website HERE. This site does not appear to have been updated since November 2011.

Why was the show named “Antony & Cleopatra?

There has been no official explanation, but perhaps this entry from On the Box’s 10 TV Shows to Look Out For in 2012 gives a clue :

A bit of gentle BBC drama which tells the story of two old school friends who meet after 50 years of family life and fall in luuurve. The two widowed 70-year-olds (not called Anthony or Cleopatra), have a whole load of baggage to bring to the relationship which promises to make this a realistic and unique approach to the usual TV love story plot. Written by Sally Wainwright, who penned the popular Unforgiven for ITV earlier this year, the drama will feature as part of the BBC’s Shakespeare season which will see several of the bard’s plays remade for your televisual viewing pleasure.

    Update : 11 January 2012

We’ve found out who have been cast as the two leads of this show. Derek Jacobi will play “Antony” and Anne Reid will play “Cleopatra”. We found this information in a CV (stumbled across online) of one of the crew (not cast) members on the show. Neither the production company nor the BBC has yet made any formal announcement of the cast list, but if this new info is correct, then we think its brilliant and inspired casting. All of the supporting cast (i.e. the children and the baggage) will have to work hard to keep up with these two strong veterans of stage and screen.

Coincidentally, Shepherd Management announced today that Dean Andrews will be joining Derek Jacobi and Anne Reid in this project. Another actor known to have been cast is Tony Gardner.

@IanWylie just tweeted that Nicola has been confirmed to play Derek Jacobi’s daughter, Gillian, in this drama. Another cast member mentioned in Ian’s tweet is Sarah Lancashire. Thanks to Ian, you can read the BBC press release HERE. (Between last May and today, the BBC appeared to have decided to drop the “h” in “Antony”.)

Nicola to play the mother of a teenage son? That’s about as far away from “Ruth Evershed” as you can get. YES!

    @IanWylie then tweeted

Spoke to Antony and Cleopatra writer Sally W last week. Much of it is about Nicola Walker and Sarah Lancashire’s characters

I guess that means we can expect a more detailed write-up from Ian, closer to the air date when the embargo on interviews and publicity is lifted.

    Family Chart

Here’s a family chart we’ve compiled, showing you the relationships between the various characters. As we receive more casting news, we will update this chart to include additional characters. (click on the image to view a larger pic)

    Update : 12 January 2012

Tony Gardner has shared this pic on Twitter of the two young actors who will be playing sons on this show.

The young man on the right, Josh Bolt, 17, will be playing Nicola’s character’s son.*
See comments on this pic from Liz below. Thanks, Liz.

    Inside Men

From the Whats on Stage press release for Di and Viv and Rose, which was subsequently confirmed by Nicola’s Spotlight page, we know that she has been cast in this new BBC One production. Nicola will play a character called “Kirsty Doyle”. HERE is more information from the BBC.

This Guardian article claims that the programme is scheduled for transmission in 2012. This article from Best British TV tells us that transmission is likely to be early 2012 as they have only commenced shooting in August. We have no information on how big (or small) a role Nicola will have. Given that there are four male leads and the show centers around their attempt at staging a heist, and Nicola was not mentioned in the BBC’s own press release, it is unlikely that Nicola will have that big a role.

    Update : 31 December 2011

Amazon UK has listed the DVD box set for this show as being available for pre-order and listed its release date as 27 February 2012. This implies that the show will be transmitted in the UK sometime in early February, although as of this writing, no air date has been announced yet by the BBC. It seems strange that for a show so close to being aired, there is still hardly any publicity for it in the mainstream press. Then again, it is not uncommon for the BBC to push back the DVD release date once they’ve made up their minds on an actual air date.

The BBC has a rather inconsistent policy when it comes to the release of DVDs of its shows. For some shows, such as New Tricks, the DVD box sets are often released more than 6 months after the relevant series has aired. But for shows such as Being Human and more recently, Spooks and Downton Abbey, the DVD box sets have been released just a month or so after the shows have aired.

Incidentally, we’ve been told by Nicola that hers is only a small role in this show.

    Update : 13 January 2011

The BBC Media Centre has released information about the first episode of this programme which you can read HERE. We understand from various sources that the show is due to be broadcast in the UK between 28 January 2012 and 4 February 2012.

HERE is the BBC press pack which includes interviews with the four lead actors. Nicola does not feature in the press pack.

    Update : 19 January 2012

The first episode of this show will air on BBC One on Thursday, 2 February 2012, at 9 pm (GMT).

    Update : 20 January 2012

Here is the trailer for Inside Men which the BBC has made available in which Nicola makes a brief appearance and delivers this line, “we’re happy, we’re family, that’s enough, isn’t it?”

    New Tricks

Nicola will guest star in UK TV series, “New Tricks”, in episode 2 titled “Old School Ties”, which will air sometime in 2012. Actor Tony Gardner (@tonygardner) just tweeted,

A whole heap of famous actors in the readthrough, but most excited to run into the wonderful Nicola Walker.

He subsequently confirmed the title of the episode.

New Tricks is a much loved UK TV dramady about a fictional cold case squad, Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad (UCOS), which is made up of 3 retired police officers but led by a woman officer who is still on the police force. The series title is taken from the popular expression “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”. Cast regulars include Amanda Redman, Alun Armstrong and Dennis Waterman, all household names in the UK. The show was recently renewed for both Series 9 and 10. Series 9 will air sometime in 2012. You can read all about this show on its Wikipedia page or IMDB page.

At the moment, the BBC’s official New Tricks website is only updated to Series 8.

We will update this Post as soon as we know more about the relevant episode and its air date.

    Update : 20 November 2011

“Old School Ties” is written by Sarah Pinborough (@SarahPinborough on Twitter, or visit her website) and directed by Julian Simpson (@JulianSimpson1, or visit his website). This episode is starting to sound better and better.

    Update : 25 November 2011

@JulianSimpson1 tweeted today, “Also penultimate day with Nicola Walker, who has already owns this episode. Together we’ve made the set fantastically sweary.”

    Update : 26 July 2012

This AcornMedia webpage tells us that the Region 2 DVD for series 9 of New Tricks will be released on 3 November 2012. Given that there will be 10 episodes in series 9, we count back 10 weeks or so, which brings us to late August for a possible UK transmission date for series 9. That would bring it right round the time when Last Tango in Halifax is supposed to start airing!

    Update : 16 August 2012

Tweets from both @JulianSimpson1 and @SarahPinborough indicate that Series 9 of New Tricks will begin airing in the UK as from 27 August 2012. Nicola’s guest episode will air on 3 September 2012.

    Update : 17 August 2012

We have this programme summary about episode 2 from the BBC Media Centre :

The UCOS team reinvestigate the disappearance of PE teacher Jason Bowe after the remains of a body are discovered on the perimeter of the elite public boarding school where he taught.

The investigation couldn’t have come at a worse time for the school, which is preparing to welcome a former pupil, the Rt Hon Geoffrey Parkes MP, for the opening of a new computer centre.

Twenty-five year old Bowe went missing from Peregrine Manor School on the last day of term in June 2007. His disappearance didn’t greatly concern the head teacher Elizabeth Clayton, who saw it as a typical of the lack of commitment displayed by young teachers who move jobs regularly.

The team sense a certain amount of reluctance from the staff to cooperate with their enquiries until they speak to home support worker Helen Hadley, who not only sheds light on Bowe’s time at the school but is also the only person to show any compassion towards him.

Something of a loner as far as his colleagues were concerned, Bowe appears to have got on better with his students, forming close and often inappropriate relationships with several. But could his behaviour have rattled someone enough to kill him?

Amanda Redman is Detective Superintendent Sandra Pullman, Alun Armstrong is Brian Lane, Dennis Waterman is Gerry Standing, Susannah Harker is Elizabeth Clayton, Nicola Walker is Helen Hadley, Phoebe Fox is Eleanor Higgins and Brian Pettifer is Archie Milgrow.

    Update : 22 August 2012

In an article in the 25 August 2012 issue of Whats on TV, Amanda Redman namechecks Nicola as a special guest star in episode of Series 9. (Click on the image to view a larger pic and to read the article.)

Nicola’s guest episode will air on Monday, 3 September 2012 at 21:00 GMT on BBC One. That is also the day and time slot when episode 1 of A Mother’s Son will also be airing on ITV. As of this writing, we do not know whether Nicola will appear in episode 1 of A Mother’s Son or whether her guest role is limited to episode 2 only. If she makes an appearance in episode 1, that will be a historic first for her in that she will be seen in two different programmes on two different channels in the UK at the same day and time!!!

    Update : 28 August 2012

There are two small entries about Nicola in this week’s Radio Times (scans courtesy of @born_spook)

Here are two entries we found from this week’s TV & Satellite Times

    Update : 31 August 2012

Here is a short synposis of Nicola’s guest episode which appears in the 1 September 2012 issue of Whats on TV (click to view larger image). Beware of possible spoiler in the article, so don’t click to see a larger image if you don’t want to know.

Good to know that Nicola will have lots of scenes with Alun Armstrong. But it looks like Nicola is back in kooky mode for this role.

Anthony Calf, a series regular, also appeared in Gethsemane [Stage] but he did not have any scenes with Nicola.

Dennis Lawson, a new series regular starting from Series 9, also appeared in the same episode of Pie in the Sky [TV] as Nicola, but they did not share any scenes.

    Ruth Evershed Scrapbook

If you have not yet seen the last ever episode of Spooks which was transmitted in the UK on 23 October 2011, and do not know what happened to Ruth Evershed, Nicola’s character, then stop reading right now and click away.

On and off (mostly on) for over 10 years, Nicola has played “Ruth Evershed”, the super brilliant analyst on the Grid in Spooks. Following the transmission of the last ever episode of Spooks in the UK on 23 October 2011 in the UK, Nicola is done playing this character. In order to commemorate the end of Spooks, we would like to put together a scrapbook of messages and fan artwork for Nicola. If you would like to contribute, please Email Us with your contributions together with the following information :

    1. your name, or the name you would like to use for this scrapbook
    2. whether you agree to have your name disclosed in the final version of the scrapbook
    3. whether you agree to share your contribution with other fans who have made contributions – if there is sufficient interest and as long as everyone agrees to share, we may make the contents available online here or publish hard copies of the scrapbook, at cost, so that fans can buy a copy.

Tell Nicola how you met Ruth Evershed, how your friendship with this character has changed or influenced your life. Tell Nicola how you feel about her interpretation of Ruth Evershed on screen, and how you feel about the end of Spooks, in particular, how they dealt with Ruth Evershed in the end.

Putting your thoughts in writing or in artwork, and having this delivered to Nicola, may help you overcome any sadness in having to say goodbye to such a beloved TV show and a much loved character.

Your contribution can be in any form : thoughts, comments, poems and/or artwork. Your contribution will not be moderated or edited for content, unless the editorial team feel that any part is inappropriate for a scrapbook of this nature.

If you are contributing artwork, make sure that it is in a format that we can read (e.g. JPG files) and that you have made the settings of those files suitable for printing.

    Nicola on Celebrity Master Chef

    Recap by Contributor, Mandy Mulford

pic courtesy of Mr. Ian Wylie

    Recap

Celebrity Masterchef is a UK reality programme which features local celebrities as contestants. For the current series, the three finalists are : actor, Nick Pickard; England rugby player, Phil Vickery and TV journalist Kirsty Wark. Their challenge this week was to cook lunch, on location, for the cast and crew of Spooks. The three contestants were asked to complete this task within 3 hours whilst working in a catering truck which did not give them too much room to move, and with equipment with which they were not familiar.

The programme started at 2:15 pm GMT and it was already half past two when thanks to Twitter I was told about this programme, specifically the Spooks connection in today’s episode and I immediately tuned in.

For all Spooks fans there was far too much time spent on showing the contestants cooking and not enough “behind the scenes” stuff, although we did manage an occasional glimpse of Simon Russell Beale (Home Secretary, William Towers) filming a scene in his office. Back outside, as filming wrapped up for lunch, we were lucky enough to spot Nicola Walker in the queue for the catering van. She was on the phone, engrossed in what looked like quite a serious conversation. Dishes available on today’s menu included Pork Belly, Vegetable Curry or Cod with a Parsley Sauce. In addition, cast and crew were able to have vegetables, cous cous, mash potatoes and tomato and fennel bake to go with their main course. For dessert, they had a choice of banana cake or caramalised pineapple.

Next time we see Nicola is at “the pass” ordering the Cod in parsley sauce with mash and carrots with a very big smile on her face. Max Brown (Dmitri Levandis) ordered the same. In the dining room, Nicola appeared to be thoroughly enjoying her meal, and actually wished her portion was larger. She also revealed, with a mischievous grin, that Max would have liked to order the Pork Belly but didn’t because he was “getting his kit off” later in the week and was therefore on a very strict diet in preparation for those scenes. Max responded with an embarrassed grin. Max said he didn’t like the fennel, thought it was quite tough. They then showed us Nicola’s empty plate and her very clean knife and fork. We never found out whether either Nicola or Max ordered any dessert.
