Best Drama – BAFTA TV Awards
The 2013 BAFTA TV Awards were given out in a gala ceremony in London on 12 May 2013.
The Best Drama category was the first award given and the presenters were Damian Lewis and David Harewood.
Here’s what Anne Reid said, accepting the award on behalf of the team :
Oh my god! Oh, I drew the short straw, now I’ve got to speak. I didn’t know that we’d be first. This was the most fantastic series to be a part of. It was the most wonderful script Sally Wainwright, please, she was so wonderful. And Karen Lewis is absolutely the most wonderful producer, there everyday for you. Its just great. And I have to say that I think that it was the fact that the cast overall were really brilliant and everybody gave the most wonderful performances. And I’m so happy that the BBC have decided at last to do love stories about people who are over 35, cause some of us, you know, do have quite interesting lives, when we get to 70. Thank you very very much. Its fantastic, thank you.
Red Productions had two shows in the running for the Best Drama award : Last Tango in Halifax (Series 1) and Scott & Bailey (Series 2). The nominees from Last Tango in Halifax were seated in the front row (to the right of the screen). These included Sarah Lancashire, Anne Reid, Derek Jacobi, Nicola Shindler and Karen Lewis. Since Nicola did not have any personal nominations, she was seated further towards the end of the row. Right behind her sat the main cast of Scott & Bailey : Amelia Bullmore, Lesley Sharp and Suranne Jones. After the winner in the Best Drama category was announced, Nicola got up from her seat in order to join her cast mates on stage but before she did that, she turned to the row behind her to receive congratulations from Lesley Sharp and Suranne Jones.
For each of the production categories, like Best Drama, each production company were allowed to put forward a maximum of four names. These are the individuals whose names would be read when the nominees in their category were announced and they are the ones who will actually take home the award. For Last Tango in Halifax, Red Productions named Euros Lyn (Director), Karen Lewis (Producer), Nicola Shindler (Producer) and Sally Wainwright (writer) as their team. They are shown holding their awards in the main pic above. Once the team wins, tradition dictates that all cast members attending the award ceremony should go on stage and join in photo ops. This is why even though Nicola didn’t personally get an award as cast member, she appears in all publicity shots of her winning team.
Later in the evening, cast and crew celebrated their victory and producer, Nicola Shindler shared this pic on Twitter :
