Back in February 2015 …
First the good news, YES there will be a series 4. After Episode 6 of Series 3 was aired in the UK on 1 February 2015, an announcement was made at the end of the programme to the effect that “Last Tango in Halifax will return with a new series“, AND the BBC logged this tweet :
And now, for the bad news : Series 4 won’t be on screen until late 2016, at the earliest! Various sources have confirmed this. Read more in our Last Tango in Halifax FAQ.
Series 4 may well turn out to be a movie rather than a series with 6 episodes. On 29.11.2014, we saw on Twitter that Sally Wainwright gave a talk to the Overgate Hospice in Calderdale during which she revealed that Last Tango in Halifax might be made into a film. How exciting. Nicola on the big screen. Yes!!! At the end of the day, whether Series 4 will have six episodes or one long movie is up to Sally Wainwright and the BBC. It will also depend on the respective schedules of the lead actors/actresses.

Omg I don’t think I can wait until the end of 2016 !! I’ve watched and re-watched all of the previous 3 seasons over and over !! I love love love this series !! I found it by accident while searching for something interesting to watch that wasn’t the same old same old and it became my favorite show very quickly. I love the characters, the acting, everything about this show ! LTIH is the best !! Please please hurry up I’m missing my favorite characters ! And please please please don’t let series 4 be the finale one !!
My wife and I just finished watching LTIH on Netflix and must say it was so very enjoyable. It would be a mistake not to have an on-going series for years to come. We love the pacing of the series, its characters, and implore BBC to get on the stick and commit to many more years to come.

No, I don’t think so, the two are different projects. BTW, we’ve already reported on the possible American (and French) remake in our sidebar panel and elsewhere on this website as soon as this item was reported in the print media.
Diane Keaton acquired the remake rights way before Sally Wainwright gave her comment about a possible movie. Sally has said before that if the American remake goes ahead, she is not expected to have any involvement in it. US media companies often purchase remake rights to UK TV shows though not many will actually get produced. Some languish in development hell for years and then get abandoned. Spooks is one such example.
The movie comment was made by Sally much later (in late 2014) to the Overgate Hospice in Calderdale, before Series 3 was aired. Sally has not mentioned the possible movie again in interviews which she’s given after that comment was made. So I think that its meant to be nothing more than a throwaway comment and should not be taken too seriously. For now, we should just look forward to Series 4, however long that’s going to take to film.

Thank you for all your great info and updates re LTIH! Fab website. Have long been a fan of Nicola’s wonderful work. How very lucky are those of you who fortunate enough to see her plays and visit sets and what have you. I love LTIH and Gillian to pieces! However, I am quite gutted about the agonising wait for S4 of LTIH! Really. As IF a mere six episodes a year is not enough of an agonising wait for a true fan of this little masterpiece of a series. NOW, THIS? What?! I know you are not responsible ;). But, this just will not do! I cannot take it. It is altogether far too long! Seriously! WHY are they not filming NOW as we speak like past years started in June I believe? Darn it. :’-(
