On 5 October 2014, Digital Spy, Radio Times, SeenIt and TV Wise all carried press releases relating to this show. These press releases can be summarised as follows :
River stars Stellan Skarsgård as John River, a brilliant police officer whose genius and fault-line is the fragility of his mind – a man haunted by the murder victims whose cases he must lay to rest. A man who must walk a professional tightrope between a pathology so extreme he risks permanent dismissal, and a healthy state of mind that would cure him of his gift.
Nicola will play River’s colleague and confidant, DS Jackie ‘Stevie’ Stevenson. Lesley Manville will play their superior, Chief Inspector Chrissie Read. Eddie Marsan will play a notorious killer who haunts River.
Rounding out the main cast will be :
Adeel Akhtar as Detective Sergeant Ira King
Sorcha Cusack as Bridie, Stevie’s mother and
Georgina Rich as police psychiatrist Rosa.
The show is currently being filmed in east London and is scheduled for transmission on BBC One in 2015.

This show is a co-production between the BBC in the UK and Netflix in the US, in other words, Netflix put up some of the production costs. Which explains why the show is available on Netflix in the US (and Australia) so quickly after it aired in the UK.
