This play was very much a vehicle for Kenneth Branagh and marked his debut at the National Theatre to London, and his return to the stage after an absence of 10 years. Understandably, almost all of the reviews homed in on his performance.

Trivia

This was the play Nicola was doing when the first Series of Spooks [TV] was aired. She said that she was only able to catch bits of the show since she was at the theatre during the show’s transmission times but she liked what she saw and thought, “that’s something I’d like to be in”. So when she was subsequently invited to join the show for Series 2, she was more than happy to accept.

This play was the first performance for which Nicola has ever been nominated for an award : the Best Supporting Actress Theatregoers Choice award from Whatsonstage.com. (This is an award given on the basis of votes cast by fans/theatregoers on the WhatsOnStage site.) Nicola won. Kenneth Branagh also won Best Actor in a Play for his performance.
